Tulane WR D.J. Banks

According to Tammy Nunez, there are some injuries to report:

-D.J. Banks separated his shoulder Monday and was cautious with it Tuesday

-Ryan Grant and Julius Warmsley have hip-flexor injuries.

-Freshman linebacker Steven Funderburk has a tweaked hamstring that will sideline him for 10 days to two weeks, according to Toledo.

D.J. Banks has had a quiet camp thus far after a promising rookie campaign.  Ryan Grant has emerged as a legitimate threat to line-up across from senior WR Casey Robottom.  Hopefully, these minor injuries are just that, minor and don’t continue to nag throughout the year.

August 9th Practice (In Progress)

Tulane RB Albert Williams

As Head Coach Bob Toledo announced over the weekend, all morning practices now will begin at 8:50 AM as opposed to 9:20 AM.  Meetings would end very late in the day, sometimes as late as 11 PM and Coach Toledo felt it was best served to bump those meetings up to earlier in the day.  So now, practice will be concluding at about 11:30 AM as opposed to after 12:00 PM, allowing the team to meet before the student-athletes have class around 5:30 PM.

Some news from Tammy Nunez of the Times-Picayune from early in practice via Twitter:

@tammynunez #tulane rb albert williams just got a TD on tunnel drill. Capped it w/a standing frnt flip. Wow.

More to come…

Green Wave Practice #3 – August 6th

Today the Green Wave will partake in their third practice of preseason camp. Coming off a very productive practice session yesterday, the Green Wave will take the field at the Westfeldt Practice Facility at 9:20 AM.

Leading the Green Wave onto the practice field will be three new captains, C Andrew Nierman, S Alex Wacha, and CB Phillip Davis.  The three seniors were elected by fellow teammates yesterday as this year’s Green Wave Captains

The weather report: Weather today is expected to be once again warm and sunny, with a chance of showers towards the end of practice.

To recap yesterday’s practice, here are some highlights:

-Freshmen made some more noise on Thursday’s Practice
-Cairo Santos (K/P) is really impressing both his teammates and Head Coach Bob Toledo
-Ray Oppman, a 6’1”, 213 lb. linebacker was also impressive on the defensive side of the ball
-Sophomore Jacob Davis made a nice-catch at the end of practice from the arm of freshman QB Taylor Bullock.

Another note that is slowly becoming more evident after these first couple days of practice – the conditioning is far better than it’s been in the past.  Maybe because the players are exerting more effort or there are just more athletes on the field, as compared to years past.  Whatever it is, it is exciting to see that the Green Wave are in shape and will be, come the final two minutes of games.

Here is a video report on yesterday’s practice from Tammy Nunez, beat write for the Times- Picayune.

We will continue to provide updates throughout practice.

Football: First Practice Completed

Tulane QB Ryan Griffin (Credit: Parker Waters)

Running around in 94 degrees does not sound fun.  Running around when it feels like 108 degrees, sounds worse.

Running around when it feels like 108 degrees on turf, sounds miserable.

The Green Wave participated in their first official practice of the season today in weather sporting a 108 degree heat index.  The players were extremely excited to participate in their first practice of the year and get it out of the way.

Unfortunately I was not in attendance and will not be able to attend a practice for the next 10 days or so, however Times-Picayune beat writer Tammy Nunez was braving out the heat, and here were some of her tweets from today’s action:

Tweet #1: tammynunez It’s halftime of 1st #tulane practice and mr. Griffin has worked some throwing mechanics. Result: 2 ryan grant td’s

Tweet #2: tammynunez first #tulane practice is over and here’s quick hits: griffin=impressive, robottom=solid, davis and lauricella=interceptions, good start

Nunez was impressed with the work of Ryan Griffin.  That’s awesome news – he will need to be the leader on offense this upcoming year.

And also everyone must keep an eye on Ryan Grant.  He’s one of a handful of players to watch for this upcoming season.

Video will be uploaded shortly.
